Art Way Institute

Art Way Institute

Offers an intriguing, refreshing education

The Institute

This is a place where kids come and grow into large trees. Their education in art is done in a systematic manner and most importantly students feel that they’ve learned something after each session. Each brushstroke by students on the canvas is watched by two teachers who have compassionate eyes, that have seen the world before them. Not all who try art will embrace it instantly, but lessons taught here make you feel that you belong in this community and want to improve. It’s amazing at times to see 50 odd students sitting in ‘art posture’, finishing the work and enjoying a sense of satisfaction that a job was well done.

The vibe created by Art Way Institute makes you quickly realize that it’s more than a typical academy. And it’s invariably so because of two talented artists Achala Gunawardhana and B.A Sudath Abeysekara who have had much international exposure in arts and craft and count years of teaching experience.

Both Achala and Sudath have obtained their Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees from top Sri Lankan state universities. The duo are dispensing their knowledge in arts in a manner that students see art through their own eyes and engage in creations that will help preserve art for the future.

Art Way Gallery functions largely under the thinking of Sudath who gives purpose and impetus to all activities of this arts facility while Achala (his wife) provides the female touch to the institute while taking students through a comprehensive course study in visual and fine arts.

Achala Gunawardhana

Counting years of experience in teaching art in many Government schools Achala’s presence at Art Way Gallery/Institute as its Chairman has been an inspiration to all. But what sets her apart from other teachers is that she has mastered the skill of teaching art; which is quite different to the ability to draw art. She cherishes each step students take in the right direction of acquiring vital knowledge in art. She oversees the conduct of art sessions and ensures students at the institute develop skills through specialized activities. Students see individual skills being polished. Hence at Art Way Gallery/Institute one doesn’t see two students with the same creative skills being produced.

Achala counts many years of being an artist herself and has had solo exhibitions, participated in International exhibitions in countries like China and Korea and attended art workshops abroad. She has won many special merit awards. The achievement which put her on a pedestal was winning first place at the ‘State Art Sculpture Exhibition’ in 2012. Achala is a counselor in Visual and Performing Arts and has served the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage since 2012.

B.A Sudath Abeysekara

Carrying loads of experience in art and craft and possessing the ability to come up with new thinking like water coming out of a spring Art Way Gallery/Institute is blessed to have Sudath functioning as its Managing Director. It seems his interest in researching on Sri Lankan ancient art, craft and lifestyle has fine tuned his intellect. He is also an accomplished advertising professional. He has had many solo exhibitions here and abroad and was also the winner of the ‘Installation Art category’ at the State Art & Sculpture Festival in 2017. His intellect radiates and captures any audience regardless of age.

One occasion that he has fond memories of is when his show ‘O-kay Art Palette’ was adjudged the ‘Best Kids TV Show 2019’ at the Raigam Tele’es Awards. He has created a niche for himself by practising 3 D Street Art in Sri Lanka. Sudath has conducted international exhibitions in countries like Scotland, England and China. He is inspired by the David and Goliath narrative and wishes to use David as an icon to lift this beleaguered nation through art.
